OUR MISSION

The purpose of the Campus Recreation Department is to provide the type of safe and enjoyable experience to our patrons that influences them to become frequent users, encourages them to value a healthy and active lifestyle, and motivates them to invite their peers and colleagues to join them in these endeavors.

MEMBER ACCESS

By virtue of their direct connection to Wingate University, the following groups automatically obtain a membership to the McGee Center that allows them entrance into the recreation facility any time during hours of operation:
  • Enrolled, Registered Students
  • Faculty
  • Staff
To gain entrance into the recreation facility, members will need to have their current Wingate University issued ID. The ID will be scanned by the patron at one of the barcode readers attached to the various turnstiles next to the recreation desk. Assuming the patron has a valid membership, their card was scanned correctly, and the student employee at the recreation desk has verified the patron’s identity, they will be granted access to the recreation facility.
Due to current infrastructure and stipulations related to operational procedures, we are unable to offer memberships to any individuals that do not fall into one of the three aforementioned categories.

RESERVATIONS

CLASSROOM / CONFERENCE ROOM
Patrons who wish to reserve either the Classroom or Conference Room in the McGee Center can do so by logging into the Wingate Virtual EMS system (https://vems.wingate.edu/Login.aspx), assuming they have the requisite permissions to do so. The Campus Recreation staff will attempt to approve or deny a request as quickly as possible, but it is always a good idea to put in a request for these spaces at least one business day in advance in case there is any correspondence that needs to occur before a decision can be made.
OTHER AREAS OF THE MCGEE CENTER
In accordance with its mission, the Campus Recreation department has a responsibility to operate in a manner that best serves the Wingate campus community, in its entirety. Campus Recreation strives to, first and foremost, provide the Wingate population at-large with as many, varied opportunities for an active lifestyle as possible. As such, outside of academic classes and internal programming, the other areas of the McGee Center (i.e. Courts, Studios, Weight Room, Cardio Decks, etc.) will not be made available for reservation for specific individuals or groups on any type of regular basis.
If a member wishes to request a reservation of an area of the McGee Center that is not the classroom or conference room, they can do so by contacting the Assistant Director for Facilities, Evan England (e.england@wingate.edu). If at all possible, this request needs to be made two business days in advance and include as many details as possible, including information such as:
  • Date(s)
  • Time(s)
  • Space(s) Needed
  • Number of Participants
  • Contact Information
  • Equipment Required
  • Description of Activity
  • Purpose of “Event”
All of the above criteria, and any additional information provided, will be taken under consideration by the Campus Recreation staff when making a decision of whether to accommodate the special request. The aforementioned information will be evaluated against a number of different factors to help reach a decision. These factors include, but are not limited to:
  • Does the request embody the mission, vision, and values of Campus Recreation?
  • How does the request serve the interests of the Wingate campus community at-large?
  • Would the request have an adverse effect on a significant number of patrons utilizing the facility at that time?
  • Would the request have an adverse effect on any other programs and services taking place during that time?
  • Would approval of the request create additional risk management or logistical concerns for the Campus Recreation staff?
  • Are there other spaces available that could accommodate the request?
  • Are there extenuating circumstances facing the requestor(s)?
  • Financially, would the group or individual be looking to profit off use of the McGee Center, and would Campus Recreation incur any costs as a result of the request?
Each and every request will be reviewed and evaluated on an individual basis, meaning no recurring or blanket approvals will be made. This is to ensure proper attention is always given to the aforementioned evaluation factors, no favoritism is shown towards a specific group or individual, and no perceived “magic formula for approval” is established.
